Founded as the Cape Town Philatelic and Exchange Club on 3rd May, 1911; we became the Royal in August, 1953.



The Royal Cup (Presented in memory of the late W G Combrink, RDPSA): the cup shall be awarded for the best exhibit of the calendar year.

 The Arthur V Jacob Cup (Presented by the late Arthur V Jacob, FRPSL): the Committee shall invite up to four of the best exhibits of the previous calendar year, not including the exhibit that is to win the Royal Cup, to compete for this award at the AGM. Competitors may not exhibit more than 100 standard sheets. The winner will be chosen by the vote of members present.

 The A A Jurgens Cup (Presented by the late A A Jurgens, FRPSL RDPSA): the cup shall be awarded for the best research presentation by an exhibitor during the year.

The Wannerton Cup (Presented by the late JWT (John) Wannerton RDPSA, FRPSL and late Alicia Wannerton FRPSL): for the best postal history exhibit of the year.

The David Crocker Shield (Presented by the late DG (David) Crocker RDPSA): for the best one-frame exhibit (15 or 16 standard pages as determined by the committee from time to time) at the competitions meeting.

The R W Wilson Award for Classics (Bequest of the late R W Wilson): a cash award for the best classical exhibit of the year (where a classical exhibit is defined as one devoted to material issued before and up to 1900).

The R W Wilson Award for Thematics (Bequest of the late R W Wilson): a cash award for the best thematic or topical exhibit of the year.

The Kaganson Cup (Presented by the late Sam Kaganson FRPSL): for the best thematic or topical exhibit at the annual competitions meeting.

The Gilbert Morris Research Publication Award: a purse being the proceeds of the endowment derived from the bequest to the Society by the late Gilbert Morris (a former secretary, honorary life member and professional librarian who encouraged research, publication and the expansion of the Society’s Library) to a member of the Society who makes a substantial contribution to philatelic knowledge through publication in the preceding year or three years.

The Simenhoff Cup (Presented by the late L Simenhoff, RDPSA, FRPSL): for an exhibit at the annual competitions meeting, or service to the Society, at the discretion of the Committee.

The G I Ratcliffe Trophy: for an exhibit at the annual competitions meeting, or service to the Society, at the discretion of the Committee.

The CRV Solomon Cup (Presented in memory of the late C RV Solomon): for an exhibit at the annual competitions meeting, or service to the Society, at the discretion of the Committee.

The Royal Medallion: the Royal Medallion is presented to the organisers of each year’s national Philatelic Exhibition. In even years the award is made at the discretion of the Exhibition Jury to the best exhibit from the Red Gibbons and in odd years to the best exhibit not in the Red Gibbons.

The Wally Jaffe Shield (Presented by Wally Jaffe): for the best exhibit by a Junior at a competition event (the Junior national or if there is no Junior National such other competition as the Committee decides.

The Wally Jaffe Cup (Presented by Wally Jaffe): for the best exhibit by a Junior member in the calendar year.
